When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language. And they were amazed and astonished, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? … We hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.” (Acts 2:1-8, 11b)
Do you notice how easy God makes it for the first Christians to share their faith in Jesus? The story starts with them all in one place together. And then they hear a great noise, and they see what looks like fire coming to rest on each of them. Jesus has kept His promise and sent the Holy Spirit to live in them and to do God’s work through them.
None of them had to go anywhere to get the Spirit. None of them had to go through special rituals to invite Him in. No, the Spirit came because Jesus sent Him, and He stays with us and in us, even today—in every baptized believer, everyone who belongs to Jesus.
And then what? On this special occasion, God gives them a gift that attracts a lot of attention from the foreigners visiting Jerusalem! This one time they are able to speak languages they have never learned, and to tell about what God has done to save us through His Son Jesus Christ. It’s no surprise that a huge crowd collects to hear this miracle. But still, the young Christians have done basically nothing under their own power—God gave the miracle, God collected the people, and God gave faith to those who heard about Jesus! And thousands came to faith.
Today when we share our faith in Jesus, it’s usually a bit less flashy. But it’s still the Holy Spirit at work, speaking through us and bringing people to faith. We tell people what we have learned—that God came into our world as a human baby to rescue us from the power of evil and death; that Jesus laid down His life on the cross to make this happen, and then rose from the dead, never to die again; and that everyone who trusts in Him has peace with God and becomes one of His children.
And if we’re nervous, we can tell God about that! We can say, “Dear Father, I’m afraid to share my faith. Would You please make it as easy as possible for me, so I can do this thing that makes You happy?” In fact, we can even ask, “Would You please make it so I’m in the middle of it before I realize it?” I did that, and God heard me and made it happen, and it was the least scary thing ever.
WE PRAY: Dear Lord, I want to share my faith in Jesus. Please teach me how. Amen.
