Psalm 62:5-7 – For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from Him. He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken. On God rests my salvation and my glory; my mighty rock, my refuge is God.

The apostle Paul warned the young pastor Timothy about what lay ahead for the church: “For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teaching to suit their own passions” (2 Timothy 4:3). We know all about itching ears. All around us people listen for the voices they want to hear and tune out all the rest. People create their own spiritual paths, the personal, private “truths” that will best satisfy their needs, or so they believe. Sometimes we have itchy ears too, listening to the many voices so readily available in our world today and choosing those teachings we favor, scriptural or not. The world’s many voices compete for our attention.

Moved by the Holy Spirit, the psalmist is listening too, but he shuts out those other voices, turning aways from the gods that others worship and the deceitful, confusing temptations of the devil. The psalmist knows who will answer his prayers and gives himself a little encouragement as he waits for answers, a little pep-talk for his soul: “For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from Him.” No one else has the answers and the hope that God alone can provide. God is our rock, our fortress and our safe refuge. We can trust His promises. He is our hope and our salvation, and one day we will know the eternal safety of life in His presence.

“On God rests my salvation.” Centuries after the psalmist wrote these words, another faithful believer was looking for answers. God sent His angel with the message that Joseph of Nazareth needed to hear. The Child of his betrothed wife Mary was the Son of God. Joseph was given a Name for the Holy Child: “You shall call His Name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21b). The Name Jesus means “God saves” or “salvation.” Jesus is the One on whom our salvation rests. Through His death and resurrection, He accomplished all that was needed to save us. In Him we have hope, and we love to hear His voice in His holy Word. By the help of the Holy Spirit, it is a voice we recognize as the voice of our salvation: “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of My hand” (John 10:27-28).

WE PRAY: Lord God, help me to tune out the tempting voices of the world. For You alone my soul waits in silence. Amen.

Reflection Questions:

  1. We live in a time when our ears are tickled 24/7. How do you guard against being consumed by the blitzkrieg of media, entertainment, talking heads, and diversions available at your fingertips?
  2. Paul told Timothy to “always be sober-minded” (2 Timothy 4:5b) in his life and ministry. What are the areas in your life where a sober-minded approach would help you?
  3. In the midst of all the world’s distractions, God alone is our rock and our salvation, our unshakeable fortress. Please take a moment to thank God for His constancy in your life.
