Daily Devotions

In the early decades of the last century, a man found his Model-T Ford stalled in the middle of the road.

Normally, a handy individual he did his best to get his vehicle going again. Even so, no matter what tricks he applied, the machine wouldn’t work.

Just as he was about to start the long walk to a service station, a large car pulled up behind the frustrated motorist. A slender, wiry, rather energetic fellow stepped out and asked if he might provide any assistance.

Having received permission, the newcomer tinkered around for a few moments. Then he stood up, smiled and said, “Now try it!” In a second the engine leaped to life. It was only when the machine was humming that the Good Samaritan identified himself as Henry Ford.

Before he got into his vehicle, he explained: “I designed and build these cars, so I know what to do when something goes wrong.”

In recent years I’ve noticed a lot of people appearing on talk shows and writing self-help books. Many of these individuals tell us they have found a new way for us to get our lives running again. They say, “In order to find happiness all you have to do is follow my advice and let yourself go, or pick yourself up, or let others down.”

I’ve also noticed, in spite of these advice-givers, the lives of many people remain more or less the same. They just don’t seem any happier.

This is why I’ve concluded that it’s time to let the Lord, the Designer and Builder of our bodies, minds and souls, to have a look under our hoods. He who sent His Son into the world so we might be forgiven and saved, knows how to get things running right.

It’s true. When God is in control of your life, when the Savior is by your side, problems will be put into their proper perspective; hurts and horrors seem less frightening.

Surprised? Don’t be. When God takes a look and makes the adjustments, you will be blessed.

From a devotion originally written for “By the Way”

THE PRAYER: Father and Creator, we are indeed fearfully and wonderfully made. Keep us in good running order until we have finished the race and rest in You. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
