Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is the SENT Initiative?
SENT is our expansive, holistic, multi-layered plan to answer the pressing challenges and realities of sharing the Gospel in the 21st century.
This initiative brings greater vision, clarity, and definition to the work LHM is already doing. God has shown us that He can do more through people like you and me than we could ever imagine — if we only allow ourselves to go where He is sending us. With billions of people around the world living without the hope of Christ — not only in foreign lands, but also in our communities here at home — declining church membership, and the hesitancy of many believers to share their faith, LHM’s mission of Bringing Christ to the Nations—and the Nations to the Church is more relevant now than ever before.
2. Does SENT stand for anything? Is it an acronym for something?
As an organization focused on proclaiming the Gospel to all corners of the earth, LHM chose SENT as the name for this initiative because God calls all of us to be on a constant mission for the Savior.
The name is based on John 20:21, in which Jesus says to all his disciples, “As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” Jesus was sent into the world to become the savior of those who would believe. We are sent into the world to proclaim what Christ has done and call people to faith in him. Therefore, every Christian should share God’s message of love and hope locally and, if possible, support the work of bringing the Gospel to the ends of the earth. SENT is presented in all caps to lift up and distinguish the name of this important initiative.
3. Why should I give money to this initiative?
For more than 100 years, LHM has been sowing seeds of biblically-inspired hope, love, and transformation throughout our communities and around the world. But this work is FAR from complete — and some of our greatest challenges lie ahead.
Two-thirds of the world’s population does not know Christ; more and more Americans — both inside and outside the church — are pledging allegiance to the “morality of self-fulfillment,” which is rapidly becoming the culture’s moral norm; and Islam is the world’s fastest-growing religion and is projected to surpass Christianity in the second half of the century. Today — RIGHT NOW — the call is urgent. Now there is a new opportunity for you to take a bold step forward with LHM. As the priesthood of all believers, we are called, equipped, and SENT to make that Gospel known to the more than three billion people who have little-to-no opportunity to hear of its life-saving message.
4. Where or to what does my monetary gift exactly go towards?
To create the greatest impact for our friends, families, churches, communities, and world, the SENT Initiative focuses on four key areas:
- Energizing, Equipping, and Engaging Laity for Outreach ($21 million)
- Growing God’s Kingdom through Expanded Media Outreach ($111 million, including $50 million designated for endowment)
- Bringing the Gospel to the Unreached Around the World ($44 million)
- Engaging Communities in the Digital Mission Field ($11 million)
5. How often does LHM have an initiative like this?
God has called Lutheran Hour Ministries to proclaim the risen Savior around the world. But with billions of people still unreached with the Gospel message around the world, our work is not done.
This initiative is meant to bring greater vision, clarity, and definition to the work LHM is already doing. The sense of urgency for sharing the Gospel NOW is why SENT was established as our first comprehensive initiative in more than two decades.
6. How long have you been seeking money and how much longer may I contribute to this initiative?
The funding aspect of SENT was quietly launched in 2015 with a goal to raise $242 million by the year 2020.
It is with gratitude to God, and deep appreciation to the multitude of people who have already supported this effort, that the SENT Initiative has already raised more than $168 million — a number that continues to grow each day!
7. What’s up with The Lutheran Hour Speaker?
We are pleased to welcome the Rev. Dr. Michael Zeigler as the new Speaker of The Lutheran Hour.
He joined the LHM family Oct. 1 and will broadcast his first sermon on Reformation Sunday (Oct. 28). Rev. Zeigler has served as pastor of Epiphany Lutheran Church in south St. Louis since August 2014. Before becoming a pastor, he served as an aircraft maintenance officer in the Air Force. In addition to connecting with people through the traditional methods of radio and in-person events, we look forward to partnering with Rev. Zeigler to utilize the expanding possibilities for sharing the Gospel that are offered by new technologies.
8. If I decide to give to SENT, can I designate if my gift stays in this country or will it assist in spreading God’s Word outside of this country?
SENT provides multiple giving opportunities that allow you to support LHM in sharing the Gospel here at home or around the world.
You can designate your gift to be used where most needed or towards any of the four strategic priorities.
9. Who can I speak to at LHM about obtaining more information about SENT or where can I look online for more information?
We would love for you to discover more! Check out the videos on this site to see why SENT was needed, meet people impacted through ministry programs, and learn what we can accomplish together.
If you still have questions, you can contact us at SENT@LHM.ORG or 1-800-944-3450 for more information.
10. If I decide to give to SENT, will I (or my church) receive any follow up information as to what progress is being made (did you meet your goals, what’s going on, etc.)?
Yes, we look forward to sharing the impact that your gifts are making through SENT.
You will receive future mailings directly related to the SENT Initiative and see examples of how your gifts are making an impact through publications such as The Lutheran Layman newspaper.
11. How do I remove my contact information from this SENT Initiative?
While we hope that you will want to stay updated on the progress and impact of the SENT Initiative, we will be happy to respect your wishes if you decide that you want to limit the number of mailings or be removed altogether. Call us at 1-800-876-9880 and we can take care of your request right away.
12. I asked not to be mailed any asks for money. Why did you send this “SENT – The Secret is Out” mailing to me in August 2018?
Because LHM is a laity-driven ministry and work on your behalf, and because this is a significant strategy commitment for the next few years, we wanted to make our entire ministry family aware of these plans.
We want to be transparent about what we’re doing and share the exciting things God is doing. And because we are not asking for a gift in this mailing, we went ahead and made a special exception. Please know we never expect a gift anytime we contact you. We covet your prayers and want you to follow the Lord’s leading on how, when and if you give a financial gift.
