Nurturing Your Faith - Part 2: Prayers of Gratitude

By: Don Everts
The believer's prayer of gratitude is the focus of session two of Nurturing Your Faith, a Bible study from Lutheran Hour Ministries. In this second session, we'll consider how thankfulness toward God has been expressed in Scripture and what that means for us today.

Many of the Bible's most well-known prayers of gratitude are found in the Psalms of the Old Testament. Here they're offered in thanks for God's material provision in lean times, His protection against calamity, and His continued presence in the lives of His people. Today, we also offer prayers of gratitude and, like the ancient people of Israel, thank Him for His love, the work of His Son Jesus, and the gift of the Holy Spirit.

The apostle Paul was a strong advocate for maintaining an attitude of thanks toward God. Whether in times of hardship or times of plenty, he acknowledged God's beneficent hand in his life. In fact, though he experienced all manner of distress and adversity, it was he who said, "In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you" (1 Thessalonians 5:18). And so, it should be in our lives, as again the apostle said: "And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the Name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him" (Colossians 3:17).
