Heighten Your Appreciation of Luther with This Timely Little Text
This informative and easy-to-read Project Connect booklet by Dr. Carol Geisler is excellent for this year's 500th-anniversary celebration of the Lutheran Reformation. Inside you will discover some of the key events that shaped Luther's thought, leading him to dedicate his life to God and, by extension, make some extraordinary contributions to the life of Christian church in Europe and, ultimately, around the world.
It was Romans 1:16-17 that was a watershed Scripture for Luther: "For I am not ashamed of the Gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, it is written, 'The righteous shall live by faith.'"
Freshly armed with this Scripture, and others, Luther understood that the Gospel trumped all, including his obsessive preoccupation with his state of sin and the inadequate sense he had of ever measuring up to the strict rules and obligations imposed by the Catholic Church. In all this Jesus was the answer Luther needed. God's free forgiveness offered through Christ's saving work on the cross, backed by His glorious resurrection, liberated Luther completely. Geisler writes, "When he realized the truth about this gracious gift of God for sinners, Luther said he felt as if the gates of paradise had opened for him."
This is a booklet worth reading and keeping handy, especially in this wonderful year of celebrating the 500th anniversary of the Reformation.
