Live the Six: Learning to Live as an Everyday Missionary
by Dion Garrett
Twenty-first-century life is a whirlwind for many, and chances are pretty fair things won't throttle back anytime soon. With so much to preoccupy us -- employment, family, finances, relationships, community concerns, issues on the horizon -- how do we take the Good News we hear on Sunday and make it real the rest of the week? In other words, how do we Live the Six days beyond Sunday? If we insulate ourselves from the world, our outreach stops, and we forfeit all kinds of opportunities to impact people's lives. How do we get out and connect with those in need, speaking our faith in public where Christ's love can be shared with people -- where they are?
The place where outreach becomes real is where we live, where we work, where we buy our groceries, where we play golf and go fishing. In this Project Connect booklet by Pastor Dion Garrett, he shares practical, down-to-earth strategies for taking the Gospel to the streets, sharing it with those we meet -- our neighbors, our friends, maybe even somebody at our church. For Garrett, the key is to "go beyond one day." In other words, to Live the Six isn't about radically altering your life. "It's about inviting God into the life you're already living and finding ways to serve Him by meeting the needs of people around you."
Dion Garrett is associate pastor and director of Community Engagement at St. John, a congregation of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod, located in Ellisville, Missouri.
