TEXTS: Ecclesiastes 3:11 - He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.
Romans 8:28 - And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.
Happy New Year! Did the last year go by like you thought it would? Were there any surprises? Any major disappointments? As you celebrate the end of one year and the beginning of another, you can be sure God was at work in your life. Sin, death and the devil cause all kinds of terrible things in the world. The Lord doesn't promise to make our troubles go away, but He does promise to be with us no matter what, and help us handle whatever happens. He doesn't cause evil things to happen in our lives. In fact, in Romans the apostle Paul says God will always work for our good, even in awful situations. He can bring good out of bad. He can make ugly things beautiful.
In Ecclesiastes God says He will make everything beautiful in time -- in HIS time. As you look back over the past year, there may be things that don't seem very beautiful. Sickness, injury, rejection, failure and death can leave deep and lasting wounds. What then? Has God forgotten His promise to work all things to our good? God never forgets, and He always keeps His promises! He doesn't work according to our schedule, or when we think the timing is best. He knows what we need and promises to supply our needs in His time. His timing is always perfect.
We may never know in this life the ways He brings good out of the things the devil intended for evil. We might never understand the ways He will make ugly things beautiful, until we are made beautiful too. The truth is we are dreadful and stained with sin, but He will fix that in His time too! His plan, going back to the Garden of Eden, was to redeem His people by sending His only Son to die in our place. No matter the pain in the past year, God promises a good, perfect and beautiful eternity in heaven with Him. In Jesus, He will make all things beautiful -- in His time.
THE PRAYER: Heavenly Father, thank You for the ways You have worked in my life over the past year, and for the good You will bring me in the new year. Fill me with the certainty of Your promise to be with me through this life and to work all things to my good in heaven with you. In Jesus' Name I pray. Amen.
