Hebrews 7:23-25 - The former priests were many in number, because they were prevented by death from continuing in office, but He holds His priesthood permanently, because He continues forever. Consequently, He is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.

It's been a rough couple of years. It's the people I miss most—the ones who lost their jobs or chose to retire when the pandemic hit; the ones who moved away to find work; the ones who died. It doesn't feel right to be going to a new doctor I don't know and am only beginning to trust, to see unfamiliar faces in the place of my friends, to have the perfect joke to tell to someone I love—but then I remember, with a lurch of the heart, that she's with the Lord.

And of course I know, as I grow older, that this sort of thing is only going to increase. The little losses and the big ones—they add up. And how I long for someone who will never change and never leave me!

And that is exactly what God has given us, in Jesus our Savior. I know that Jesus isn't going to leave me—He loves me, and gave Himself for me so that I could be His forever. He isn't going to die on me—He has already died on the cross, once and for all. Yes, and He has risen from the dead as well, breaking the power of death forever, and promising that He will share that everlasting life with everyone who trusts in Him. He is permanent—and because of Him, we will be, too.

So there's that lasting, stable love I was longing for—someone who will always be there, always care, and always be able to help when I'm in trouble. He is the One who can "save to the uttermost" all of us, because He lives forever. And what does He do with that life? Among other things, He prays for us. He intercedes with God the Father for us. With such an Advocate, we are safe forever.

THE PRAYER: Dear Jesus, help me to trust in You as the one permanent thing in this world of change. Amen.
