Sons are a heritage from the LORD, children a reward from Him. Psalm 127:3
The Bible teaches that children are gifts from God and a sign of His favor. God blessed Adam and Even and said, "Be fruitful and increase in number" (Genesis 1:28). Throughout Scripture children are regarded as special blessings from God. The psalmist calls them a heritage and a reward. He refers to children as "arrows in the hands of a warrior." He concludes: "Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them" (Psalm 127:4-5).
Today children are regarded by many as liabilities instead of blessings. Just as we are learning so much more about the beautiful mystery of God's creating hand at work in the formation of a new human life, child abuse is on the rise. The sad plight of "unwanted children" is seriously held up as a justification for killing them before birth.
What has happened? Could it be that we have forgotten that children are a "heritage from the Lord"? Let us never forget not only that God is the giver of children but also that His own Son became a child in the womb of the Virgin Mary to become the Savior of all children -- including us.
PRAYER: Lord Jesus, help each of us see in every child a gift from You. Amen.
