“But why am I so favored?” Luke 1:43
SCRIPTURE REFLECTION
Upon hearing Mary’s greeting, Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. She realized God’s favor in her life through the blessing of God’s presence.
THE JOURNEY—DAY 15
During the drive to church on Sunday morning, Bill asked his family to think about the blessings they had received from God. “At lunch today, we’ll each share a blessing and say why we are thankful for it.”
At worship, the congregation received new members, with one man being baptized. During the sermon, the pastor remarked how this man had received an early Christmas present through the water of Baptism. He spoke about how God chooses us in Christ and how each of us is chosen for a special purpose in His kingdom and mission.
Bill thought about how special he was to have been chosen by God and about the special mission in which he was involved with Chuck. He hoped someday Chuck would be baptized, too.
At lunch, Jenny talked about the blessing of her new friend, Sam talked about the blessing of helping the homeless, and Julie shared the blessing of family. Bill shared that one of the blessings for which he was thankful was the opportunity to be God’s witness for Chuck. He felt favored that God would allow him to have such an important role in His kingdom.
REALITY JOURNEY
We receive God’s favor in Baptism. Through the Holy Spirit, He pours out His gifts in us through this sacred act. We are blessed to be His children and blessed to be in His mission to others who have yet to receive His favor in Baptism.
PRAYER FOCUS
Pray for someone you know who is not yet baptized. Pray for that person to be saved by God’s mercy “through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit” (Titus 3:5). Give thanks for your own Baptism.
