The Lord Is Good!

Wednesday, April 29, 2026

Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation—if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good. … But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for His own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light. Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. (1 Peter 2:2-3, 9-10)

Babies are funny. When they get hungry, they want their milk right away—and they go looking for it in the oddest places. Our congregation had a baby boom, and for a few years, you could tell which men in our congregation had been holding babies during worship—because the men had big wet circles on their shirts. The babies had gotten hungry, and naturally turned to the nearest human being to satisfy their hunger!

Peter wants us to be just as hungry for God’s Word, which he describes as “the good news that was preached to you” (1 Peter 1:25b). This is the message about Jesus, who is God Himself come into our world to become our Savior. He was born among us as a human baby, one who slept and nursed and had to have His diapers changed, just as we did—a real human being! And as an adult, He gave His life for us, to rescue us from the power of evil, and to make us God’s own children. Like a loving father or mother, He gave His life for us, so that we might be rescued. And then He rose from the dead on the third day and came back to us, the ones He loves. We will spend eternity with Him—and it starts right now.

There are people who mock the idea of living forever with God. They say that they can expect eternal life to be boring. Some of them will even say that they’d prefer to be annihilated. But those who say such things show that they have never gotten to know the Lord, who created us and knows what makes us happy—and who loves us so tenderly. For those of us who have tasted His goodness, we know the truth: eternity is all too short for us to enjoy Him. We love Him dearly now, and we look forward to seeing Him face to face, on the day He returns.

WE PRAY: Dear Lord, cause me to know You better and to love You with all my heart. Amen.

Reflection Questions:

  1. How strongly does a baby feel about getting his or her food?
  2. What does this tell you about our own attitude toward the Lord, the One we live on? (See John 6:35-59.)
  3. Will Jesus be glad if you come to Him with your hungers and ask Him to satisfy them?
