(The LORD said) “Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell Me, if you have understanding. Who determined its measurements — surely you know! …” Job 38:4-5a

In the musical The King And I, there is a song with the lines: “When I was a boy, world was better spot. What was so was so, what was not was not. Now I am a man; world have changed a lot. Some things nearly so, others nearly not.”

Those words perfectly express my feeling this last week when I heard the discussion taking place concerning dinosaurs.

“What discussion?” you ask.

It seems that paleo-biologists are debating whether dinosaurs were cold-blooded and sluggish or warm-blooded and active. At least that’s what Roger Seymour of the University of Adelaide has said.

You see, researchers have done some measurements on blood flow nourishing the bones of dinosaurs, and some of them are saying we may have to rewrite some textbooks and re-film Jurassic Park. To some scientists these new facts are telling us that dinosaurs were not the plodding beasts we learned about when we were in school.

In short, what I absolutely knew to be true as a boy may not have been true at all. As the song says, “… world have changed a lot. Some things nearly so, others nearly not.”

So, what do I believe?

When it comes to warm-blooded versus cold-blooded dinosaurs, I’m going to remain flexible. I’m going to do that because there doesn’t seem to be any choice in the matter. All we can say is this: new facts may continue to upset the applecart of what we thought was true.

When it comes to the Lord and His Word, I’m going to remain steadfast. Indeed, I’m going to continue to trust the Lord who created all that is and ever will be. I will place my faith in the Lord who laid the foundation of the earth and is responsible for dinosaurs — cold or warm-blooded.

Trusting in the Lord: it is a great source of comfort for Christians to be able to do so. When human facts are flawed and faulty; when man’s truth can’t always be trusted, it’s a blessing to have the sure foundation that is Jesus Christ.

That’s what St. Paul was saying when he wrote, “For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 3:11).

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, once again we are seeing that man’s truth is a pretty pliable thing. May we who have seen the Savior and the sacrifice He has made for us have our faith built upon Him as found in Your Word. For those who find the world is changing a lot, may the Holy Spirit replace their doubts and fill them with confidence that Your truth remains through all generations. This I ask in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
