One of the greatest bank robbers in America’s history was Willie Sutton.
Unlike so many scoundrels, Sutton was a smartly dressed fellow. He sported a giant moustache when he pulled off his 20-plus bank robberies.
After he was arrested, a newsman asked, “Willie, why have you robbed so many banks?”
Looking at the newsman like he was a total fool, Sutton replied, “Because that’s where the money is.”
His answer sounds pretty sensible to me.
Now that all of us know where the money is, let me ask you, where would you go to find happiness?
It’s a pretty safe bet you’re not going to find it in the bank, nor in a large department store or in some mega-mall.
For a lot of us, happiness is just about the hardest item on life’s list to find.
We can’t find it in parties, and we certainly won’t find it in a liquor bottle. Where is happiness to be found? I think it can be found through Jesus’ story, which began in a Bethlehem manger and continued to a cross on Calvary.
The sacrificial suffering of the Savior says that God’s Son came into this world to take all our unhappiness and sins on Himself.
Where can a person find happiness?
It’s found in a borrowed and empty tomb. It’s found in Jesus, who is God’s gracious gift of God’s love for us.
From a devotion originally written for “By the Way”
THE PRAYER: Dear Father, as we seek to find happiness in our lives, help us look to You first. There we will see the love You have given us through the death and resurrection of Your Son! It is in His Name we pray. Amen.
