There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. Galatians 3:28
In 1958 the musical The Flower Drum Song opened on Broadway. The Rodgers and Hammerstein play had a hit song entitled, “I Enjoy Being A Girl.”
Being a guy, I cannot verify the accuracy of those lyrics. On the other hand, I’m pretty sure that song wouldn’t get a standing ovation in India.
Did you know in 1994 that populous country passed a law which stopped medical personnel from telling a couple whether their unborn child was a boy or a girl?
According to a recent article by OneNewsNow, there was a very good reason for the adoption of the law: the legislators in India knew that girls are often aborted, neglected, malnourished or intentionally starved to death.
There are times I forget the social changes Christianity has brought to this world — the changes which Jesus has brought about.
In contrast to the world’s other religions, Christianity holds that women are worthy of respect.
• After all, Jesus came to seek and save the lost, both men and women.
• God’s Son came to give His life as the ransom price for those who were lost, both men and women.
• Now, by God’s grace, the Holy Spirit works in human hearts and brings salvation. That is in the hearts of both women and men.
It’s a sad thing that because of familiarity with the text we often forget the radical nature of Paul’s words.
This is why, in light of what is happening to women in India, it is right for us to remember: “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”
THE PRAYER: Dear Lord Jesus, I give thanks that although You see everything, when You looked upon humankind you saw sinners and not sexes. May I, in thanks to You, treat everyone I meet with respect. This I ask in Your Name. Amen.
