Today’s Reading: John 20:1-9 & Psalm 126

So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb. Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. John 20:3-4

Peter and John ran from one resurrection discovery to the next. First, the stone had been rolled away. Second, the burial clothes lay folded within the tomb. Third, the place where His body had been laid is now empty. What excitement! Most of the disciples missed out on the excitement of that first Easter, because they didn’t go to the tomb. Why? Perhaps they had convinced themselves that nothing would ever happen.

Sound familiar? There can be no real excitement and enthusiasm about Christ and His church when we think nothing will happen … and so we hold back. Nothing’s likely to happen by telling someone about Jesus … by inviting someone to church … by putting such a small amount in the offering … so we hold back, thinking nothing’s going to happen anyway.

Unless excitement—or the lack of it—drives us to the Word of God to see Christ in person, we run the very real risk of being quite disappointed this coming Sunday. Yet Christ and His Word—and that alone—can lead us from any temporary Easter excitement to the excitement that lasts forever.

His joy is yours, and your excited faith can declare along with Job, “I know that my Redeemer lives” (Job 19:25). And because of that, come running! You can expect to be excited this Sunday … and the Sunday after … and the Sunday after…

Prayer
Holy Spirit, who puts into the hearts of the faithful fervent love for Christ and His church, grant us the grace of a lively faith and holy excitement as we approach our Lord’s passion and His resurrection, so we may eagerly and joyfully spread the Good News of Jesus Christ, in whose name we pray. Amen.

Response
Does your excitement today drive you to the Word, there to meet your Lord?
