Psalm 102:18-20 “Let this be written for a future generation, that a people not yet created may praise the LORD: “The LORD looked down from His sanctuary on high, from heaven He viewed the earth, to hear the groans of the prisoners and release those condemned to death.””

The Bible makes it very clear that because of sin, we are condemned to die. We know that although these words were written long ago, they also apply to us today: “These are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name” (John 20:31).

As in the psalm, there are times when our sins cause us to groan. These groans do not go unheard. God hears these groans-all the way from heaven and across the centuries. He looks down on our imprisonment and sends a Savior to release us.

And God still reaches us today through His Holy Word and sacraments. Through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism God gives us the power of Jesus’ death and resurrection! Through the Sacrament of Holy Communion He grants the forgiveness of sins! These are the means through which God gives us His grace, the free gift of eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Application: Read through Psalm 102 and note where it speaks to 21st century people.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, You speak to us through the centuries from Your Holy Word. Even when it seems You are far away, hear our cries for mercy for Jesus’ sake. Amen.
