Position Title: 'The Lutheran Hour®' Speaker
Reports to: Executive Director

Purpose:

This full time position requires a person who has a passion for reaching the lost with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. To that end, he shall be responsible for the preparation and delivery of Christ-centered messages through broadcast media and speaking engagements. He must have a Shepherd's heart for relating and connecting with many fine people who view Lutheran Hour Ministries as an extension of their own ministry. The Speaker must have a heart for the expanding possibilities that media and technology offer in Bringing Christ to the Nations—and the Nations to the Church.

The Lutheran Hour Speaker will perform his duties consistent with the LHM and Executive Services plans, strategic plans, policies, and other guidelines, and with applicable law.

Job Context:

The Lutheran Hour® Speaker shall provide key direction in several areas of the organization. This position requires a "team player" that is able to provide leadership and motivation to the staff and volunteers supporting Lutheran Hour Ministries. As The Lutheran Hour® Speaker, his loyalty shall always be directed to the proclamation of the Savior and to this organization, which he represents. All other duties and commitments shall be subject to, and seen in light of, these directives.

All writings and presentations must faithfully proclaim Lutheran Doctrine. He must never espouse or imply any teaching that contradicts said doctrine. He must strive to avoid compromising any Lutheran Doctrine.

Essential Functions:

The Lutheran Hour® Speaker is first, foremost, and always a proclaimer of the clear Gospel message of salvation which comes through Jesus Christ. All other duties shall be secondary to that primary directive. With that in mind, he shall:

  1. Provide the spiritual leadership for the organization by keeping the focus on proclaiming the Gospel.

  2. Contribute to the visionary development of Lutheran Hour Ministries and provide key direction to the organization with respect to the Christian world by participating in strategic planning for the organization.

  3. Serve as an advisor to new initiative efforts that are being introduced.

  4. Serve as principle speaker on The Lutheran Hour® radio program.

  5. Serve as principal speaker for Lutheran Hour Rallies and the International Lutheran Laymen's League's Convention Celebration Service.

  6. Serve as speaker on other media productions produced by Lutheran Hour Ministries, or companion organizations.

  7. Be a spokesman for the organization, communicating the mission to the media as well as supporters.

  8. Along with the League's International Pastoral Advisor, maintain on-going contact with clergy within the LCMS / LCC, lifting up issues of the pastoral office and serve as a facilitator for discussion, compassionately responding to needs and/or events. (i.e. military action, Columbine, Hurricane Katrina, and terrorist attacks.) The Speaker must strive to avoid political issues whenever possible.

  9. Serve, with the permission of the Executive Director, on short-term ad hoc committees and positions outside the League. He is, at all times, a representative of Lutheran Hour Ministries.

  10. Serve on the United States Ministries Department Advisory Committee for radio and television programming.

  11. Contribute articles to League publications as requested.

  12. When his presence can significantly further the progress of the League's work, at the request of the Director of Ministry Advancement, and with the approval of the Executive Director, he shall support or accompany the Ministry Advancement staff on key donor visits or presentations. He may also:
    • Encourage and acknowledge support to Lutheran Hour Ministries through written communications such as newsletters, email, appeals and correspondence with donors.

    • Personally acknowledge major gifts from donors.



  13. Be available during scheduled office hours.

  14. Coordinate work and travel schedules with the Executive Director so that the League's programs and activities are properly covered.

  15. Supervise support staff, including monitoring staff performance and preparing regular performance evaluations.

  16. Provide excellent customer service to all "customers" and co-workers.

  17. Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  1. He must be an ordained clergy who is, and must remain, at all times a member in good standing of The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod or Lutheran Church-Canada.

  2. Be creative with a passion for evangelistic outreach.

  3. Have a Gospel-oriented preaching style.

  4. Have a proven track record of success in his former positions or posts.

  5. Possess excellent written and dynamic speaking skills, as well as experience in media production and media interviews, and open to the use of new communication technologies.

  6. Be comfortable in general Christian circles. To this end he should enjoy relating with people not only on a one-on-one basis but also in group settings including a wide range of ages.

  7. Be a self-starter and good organizer who is able to travel and work within a flexible and dynamic schedule.

  8. Have his principal residence located in the St. Louis area.

  9. Must pass reference/background review.
