Sarah's Story

I used to make visits during lunch shifts at area high schools to connect with teenagers on their turf. I met Sarah when she was 14. She was the rebellious type with long dark hair, black painted fingernails and wore an oversized black trench coat. I introduced myself to her when I sat at the same table that included other teens I had already made relationships with. She didn’t think much of me I could tell by the way she reacted to questions I would ask trying to include her in the conversation. A few weeks went by and every time she would see me in the school cafeteria she would barely nod her head my way. Almost a full year went by and we were holding a Concert for local high school rock bands with open invitations for teenagers to come and listen to their peers.

I was sitting at a table outside of the concert stamping hands of those who had already paid their admission. Sarah walked up with a couple of friends and said, “Hey, you’re the lady who comes and hangs out at lunch with some of the kids, right?” “That’s me, so how are doing, Sarah?” “How did you remember my name?” she asked. “How could I forget such an incredible face!”? She pulled up a chair next to me and told her friends she would catch up to them inside in a few minutes. “So, why do you do it?” “Do what?” Why do you come to school and hang out? Why, because teenagers Rock! She laughed and said really, why do you come. I answered if you really want to know I will tell you. Jesus tells me to share the love of Christ with those who are weak in faith or maybe don’t know who He is. He also tells me to love others as He has loved me. She just shook her head and said, Cool! We talked for about 10 minutes longer and she left to catch up with her friends but not before I gave her my card with my phone number on it.

Six months passed and I got a call from Sarah. She asked if she could meet and talk later that day. Over dinner she told me she was going through a really hard time and she wanted to know more about my faith. It was an incredible opportunity to share my relationship with Jesus and how He loves her unconditionally! From that day forward Sarah would come by my office maybe once a month or so and just ask questions about God. One conversation we had she later said changed her life. She said I had once told her in a conversation that God didn’t care what I looked like on the outside it was what was on the inside He was interested in. I didn’t give it much thought when I said it but Sarah took it right to her heart. “Maybe people should start thinking like God” she laughed. “Out of the mouths of babes!” Sarah came to my house every week for bible study for 3 years. Sarah is now 21 and has a son of her own. When he was born she asked me to be his Godparent. What an honor! It was important to her to have him baptized because all she had learned about God’s plan for us. She said God put you in my life and I want you to share God with my son too! Plant the seed and He will do the rest! Sarah’s dad has become involved in a church and so has her mother and new husband, because Sarah was willing to reach out and ask about this Jesus! Sometimes He works through the youth to reach the adult! Don’t you just love it!
