Tragedy doesn’t stop the faithful

Sep. 16, 05— NICARAGUA: Most people would agree that life is too short and more fragile than any of us can imagine. In a remote church district of Nicaragua called “Christ the Lord,” where Lutheran Hour Ministries (LHM)-Nicaragua staff and volunteers do outreach ministry; families suffered a tragic loss when some of their relatives died in a bus accident.
A group of people connected with LHM and the Church had been mobilized, along with others, to attend a funeral in the North, and to offer comfort to those who were grieving. On the trip home, their bus had mechanical failure and fell into a ravine. Five people died at the scene, and the rest were taken to a hospital in critical condition. Survivors reported that “it was a very horrible experience. Only with the grace of God could we have survived.”
When the LHM-Nicaragua staff contacted its representative from the district, she said that the people who died were active members who participated in LHM activities as well as in the Church. A little girl among them had just finished an LHM Bible correspondence course last December.
Despite their devastation, relatives of the dead have sent their thanks for the spiritual information, including the Bible courses that LHM had been offering those people. They are certain that God received those who died into His kingdom. Today these members of the district thank LHM and the Church for bringing Christ to their district and sharing the Gospel of Jesus with them.
