Radio ministry leads to opening of new church Release No: 06-98 By Gerald Sonnenberg
Oct. 31, 06 KAMPALA, Uganda: Batabaire Wilberforce, a lay leader of the newly opened station in Bugiri District, says he came to know about the Lutheran Hour Ministries (LHM)-Uganda ministry center, and the Lutheran Church through its activities, as well as “The Lutheran Hour” radio program on the Nile Broadcasting Service’s (NBS) FM Radio station.
This and a live radio call-in talk show are broadcast every Sunday on NBS. It is one of the most popular radio stations in Eastern Uganda because it addresses a number of social problems like marriage, divorce, and alcoholism from a Christian perspective.
Another listener from the Bugiri District, approximately 120 miles east of Kampala, took an interest in this program, and after listening to it for a number of months, decided to call the Lutheran Church in Jinja District 70 miles west. He requested that LHM activities be extended to his area, and a Lutheran church be opened as well.
Aaron Bamuwamye, a former district facilitator for LHM in Jinja district, and now a seminary student, followed up with the listener. The LHM – Uganda office organized an outreach earlier this year. As a result, three new “preaching stations” were opened in Bugiri District. By June 2006, a total of seven areas in that district were being reached with God’s Word, and followed-up by a Lutheran Church.
Prayers were answered in the Bugiri District’s Nakavule Village as a church has now formed. The Word was proclaimed on radio from Jinja District, but it accomplished the Lord’s purpose in Bugiri District 70 miles away.
According to LHM–Uganda Director, the Rev. Charles Bameka, “Nakavule church has 16 people participating in the Bible Correspondence Course, and over 100 people worshipping with us. The Spirit of the Lord is working in many ways in our midst to the glory of God.”
To all of those who send their prayers and gifts of support to LHM-Uganda and other LHM ministry centers, a sincere thank you from all of the staff and volunteers. They pray for continued support.
