Panama Volunteer Picking Up Where Son Left Off

Oct. 7— PANAMA CITY, Panama: Sometimes God uses tragedy to bring something good into our lives. That is how Jorge Lasso views the loss of his son, Edwin, who died in a plane crash almost two years ago. Jorge is a Project JOEL volunteer with Lutheran Hour Ministries (LHM) in Panama who is using his outreach training to witness to patients at the pharmacy at where he works.
"I felt a deep call to bring the Gospel to every patient in the waiting rooms. I have shown several educational videos promoting Christian values during the times when the room is filled with people," Lasso commented.
In addition to the videos, LHM—Panama staff, along with other Project JOEL volunteers, share booklets that carry the message of the Bible with patients at this and other pharmacies and hospitals around Panama.
The tragedy that gave Lasso a clearer understanding of God's purpose for his life took place on December 26, 2007. That was the day he learned that the small airplane that his son had been hired to pilot through the mountainous countryside had crashed, killing Edwin, and two out of the three passengers he was transporting. Edwin's death was a great loss to his family, as well as for the local LHM center in Panama.
"He was a very humble person, and through his activities in the schools, and the speeches he gave, he showed his caring for others and his love for the Lord," Lasso said of his son.
A video entitled "Making a Difference Against the Odds," was produced by LHM to show the impact of Edwin's short life and to convey the message that we can all make a difference to God's people, while we are still here on Earth. This video is available online at www.lhmint.org/resources/videos.htm.
