Faith in Transit
Release No: 09-01
By Tyler Yeargain

Jan. 2— BRATISLAVA, Slovakia: With God's help, Danka Zubčáková unbound herself from the coils of alcoholism 13 years ago. She is armed no longer with the bottle, but an outstretched hand. Danka is a volunteer with LHM-Slovakia's "Bring a Friend to Church" program, an Equipping the Saints (ETS) evangelism seminar graduate, and a volunteer caregiver to the elderly in her township. She takes every opportunity to share her faith, even if that means taking it on the road.

Sitting in a compartment of a high-speed train, Danka struck up a conversation with a woman sitting near her. Something about her person must have been comforting, because before long the stranger had confided in Danka her abject alcoholism. Danka was sympathetic to the plight of her young companion, having battled the bottle herself. With her ETS training in hand, Danka asked the passenger if she'd like to join a prayer group.

ETS workshops continue to help LHM spread Christ's message of love and salvation by teaching ways that every Lutheran can personally use in their conversations with neighbors and family. LHM staff present ETS workshops to lay volunteers in congregations in their own countries as well as neighboring countries.

The passenger disclosed that she believed that "a person has to help himself through every problem." Danka explained to her that no one needs to be alone when they have God. "It is wonderful to be in God's family," Danka told her new friend. "We help each other to bear the worries, we know about one another, and mutually live in God's love."

Today, the woman is part of Danka's prayer group. She's given up alcohol, preferring instead Jesus' loving arms. Danka wrote LHM-Slovakia recently to give an update.

"We now have eight people in our prayer group. We meet a few times a week for about two hours. We sing Christian songs, read the Bible, analyze the verses, pray, and share our problems."

Danka asks that everyone pray for the well being of her prayer group and her community.

Your continued prayers and support for LHM allow outreach programs to have an impact all around the world. We ask that you prayerfully consider a gift to our International Ministries today.
