What is "Alzheimer's"? Alzheimer's is a disease
that causes memory loss and personality change by altering
the brain. There are approximately 4 million Americans
afflicted with this disease. It is expected that 15 million
people will have the disease by the middle of the next
century.
The diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease often leaves the
person and their family feeling overwhelmed and confused.
The following are some suggestions of ways to help the
family or person afflicted with Alzheimer to cope with
the disease:
Pray to God for He is the greatest caregiver.
Listening is caring - ask family members how they
are doing.
Plan little surprises of kindness, such as dropping
off a meal.
Show you care with a visit, a note or a phone call.
Since Alzheimer's disease is a progressive illness,
the symptoms experienced will gradually worsen. As the
disease advances, there may be days when familiar things
become obscure. Those with Alzheimer's may eventually
become lost in their surroundings, for example, a favorite
place may not look the same. They may also start misplacing
things, such as storing a carton of ice cream in the cupboard
instead of the freezer.
Don't let Alzheimer's inflict any more heartache. Experience
comfort in God's love and promises for you and find out
how He can be a caregiver and care bearer.
